Video on most news sites is presented in either a video gallery, where numerous videos are displayed, or as a single player placed on an article page.  The New York Times has broken ground by creating a sort of "contextual" video player which displays multiple clips related to the subject of the story, on the page where the text article appears.  This is one of the most notable aspects of the implementation of a new video content management system from Brightcove introduced last week.

To see an example, check out this page of food columnist Mark Bittman and his recipe for kasha varnishkas, one of our favorites.  Accompanying the blog post, you can fine related food videos.  I’ve pasted the image below.

We believe that videos are discovered more readily in the context of articles.  The Times might have a promising hybrid here.

Earlier this month I visited Ann Derry, who heads of the editorial side of video operations at The Times.  In this interview, she explains how Times reporters and columnists are developing personal styles in creating video.

She told us that The Times now has 15 full time video journalists in the newsroom.

This is the second interview with Ann. Our first report was published on Friday.

Gavin O’Malley interviewed Nicholas Ascheim, VP of product management for NYTimes.com,  for his story in today’s MediaPost.
