The great humorist Art Buchwald has died and he has announced his demise on a video clip/obituary just published on The New York Times.
"Hi I’m Art Buchwald and I just died," — he declared on the segment. It’s the first segment of "The Last Word, the new series of online video obituaries published by The Times.
This online video obituary was done by Times reporter Tim Weiner who spent time with Buchwald last year in Martha’s Vineyard. The obituary in the "paper" has been written by Richard Severo, one of the stable of Times obit writers.
Weiner is longtime CIA beat reporter who has been on book leave and recently returned to the paper.
I spoke with Tim a few minutes ago — he describes this new series of online obits as "fledgling." Said it was an idea that he developed during his book leave. It will be very interesting to see how this develops.
