Google Trends for Websites, launched late last month, reports website traffic, related websites and search terms. In short, the kind of services also offered by Compete and Alexa.
Trends for Websites isn’t a serious business tool yet, since the data Google currently provides are estimates based on search volume and search traffic, not accurate numbers. R.J. Pittman, Director of Product Management for Consumer Search Properties, said the estimates provide useful consumer insight to advertisers and webmasters, but its unclear if Google is hoping to become a major player in the web analytics market.
We’re not sure how much to read into Compete’s recent slip in the Nielson ratings, which Andy blogged about,
but it might indicate the
the web analytics market is already pretty crowded. The layers of information from the other Trend properties and Google’s closely guarded algorithms might give them a leg up.
