Boxee, the free software download that allows consumers to use their PC to watch television programming, is creating a pay-per-view system for content creators.
While the site allows current subscribers to MLB.com and Netflix to watch their shows with Boxee, the company is developing its own payment platform. Plans were announced last month.
I asked founder and CEO Avner Ronen how he sees the adoption of a paid model. He says that live sports will be a big driver, but so will niche, special interest content.
We are looking forward to seeing how micropayments for niche content will play out this year. In a related development, Justin.tv has announced a payment system for live niche programming.
I caught up with Avner last week at the paidContent 2010 conference in New York.
