Lots of buzz yesterday with Google's announcement that it is in early stages of a system to deliver ultra fast Internet service, at 1GBPS to homes in the United States.
Getting into the costly, capital-intensive ISP business is certainly a new business for Google and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Meanwhile Verizon FiOS has has connected 3.4 million homes to its fiber optics network. The fiber now passes over 15 million homes where service is available at 50 MBPS down and 35 up.
A Verizon spokesperson told me that FiOS has the capability to deliver data at 400 MBPS. However, Verizon has no immediate plans to increase capacity to this super fast speed, we were told.
And, the connection could be even faster:. Late last year Verizon said that lab tests show that the system could deliver as fast 10 GBPS.
We spoke with Verizon's Chris Levendos about the efforts to wire the New York area with fiber. We originally published this interview in 2008.
