Skateboarding dogs may not command as many viewers as Breaking Bad – but that doesn’t mean Dailymotion is going to abandon user-generated content to pursue premium content rights.
“If you look at the landscape, you have the program sites like the AOLs and Yahoos of the world and you have us and YouTube on the other side,” Dailymotion north America GM Roland Hamilton told Beet.TV’s programmatic video leadership summit. “It’s become a world where there’s;s not that many sites that have that upload option.”
Asked by interviewer Mike Shields, AdWeek’s digital editor, whether Dailymotion would focus entirely on premium content, Hamilton added: “It’s been a huge debate since I started at the company four and a half years ago. There was probably a point where we were thinking we were going to try going the Hulu direction.
“But the rights to that kind of content and having your whole platform built on that… it’s even challenging for a company that both has the content and is running the site. So we think it’s a huge advantage and one of our biggest strengths is having that upload (function) and that whole community around our site.”
Beet.TV’s event was presented by SpotXchange and hosted by The Hearst Corporation.
