LAS VEGAS — Video traffic on the Akamai network is accelerating quickly, and doubling faster than it did in years past, says Bill Wheaton, Senior VP and General Manager at Akamai, a cloud services centric tech platform, in an interview with Beet.TV at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas. What’s more, the traffic is growing at 75% compound annual growth rate, with the number of events delivered at 120%, on a compound annual growth rate basis. Given this increase, the quality of online video has to be just as good as TV, with no rebuffering and no stalls, Wheaton says.
“There is more and more demand for quality and more people accessing video from more devices,” he says. Akamai reaches more than 100 countries with more than 1200 network operators. The tech platform is focused on analytics and has recently revamped that offering to include real-time reporting to customers on quality of service. “It gives us a common language to talk to our customers about what’s happening with their content and how we can improve the quality.”
Next up will be more software and devices farther in the platform to make cloud delivery better, he says. “That will give a better end user experience,” he says.
